Bowdoin College

On my sweep through Maine, I had a lovely morning at Bowdoin College. Here's what struck me: the campus community is far more diverse than one might expect. The students appear to be exceptionally bright and engaged in the world around them. In fact, the admissions officer we met with told us they ask themselves the following questions when reading applications: Will you be academically interesting? What kinds of conversations will you have in the dining hall? What kind of roommate will you be? So they are clearly looking for students who are not only very smart, but also very interesting. There is construction underway for a new Arctic Studies Center which will house their arctic museum, and where arctic research, which Bowdoin has been involved in for years, will continue. There is a beautiful chapel on campus, which doesn't houses the Center for Religious Studies, but rather the McKeen Center for the Common Good. While there are religious groups that students can join, it's important to note that there are no weekly religious services of any kind on campus. Students are welcome to carpool to off-campus religious services together. Lastly, the Amtrak station is one block away which is absolutely amazing for students traveling to and from campus.
