Emory University

Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia checks a lot of boxes for a lot of students. It's extremely selective, which, quite frankly, translates into prestige for those who are seeking that. It's in the south, which is becoming an increasingly popular college destination for students across the country - yet the student population is geographically and otherwise diverse; it doesn't "feel" traditionally southern. Furthermore, with an undergraduate enrollment around 7400, it's that elusive medium-sized school that so many kids ask me for. Lastly, with undergraduate programs in the liberal arts, business, and nursing, there are dozens of majors to choose from. Some really interesting majors include Anthropology and Biology (that's one major!) Applied Math and Statistics (also one major) Biophysics, Economics and Human Health, Film and Media Management, and Business and Society. I find these interdisciplinary majors so interesting!

100% of freshmen and sophomores live on campus, and undergraduate teaching is really prioritized here, both giving it a really nice small-school feel. However, with a medical school and hospital practically on campus, over a billion dollars in annual research funding, and the CDC down the street, Emory also has large-school opportunities. There's definitely a pre-professional vibe here.

With 103 Fulbright and 3 Rhodes scholars in the past 10 years, many students undoubtedly go on to do great things. The alumni network is vast and transcends the southeast: NYC, Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia are top destinations for graduates.

Finally, fair warning: if you're looking for school spirit in the traditional sense, look elsewhere. The arts events at Emory are better attended than the big games!
