Florida Southern College

Florida Southern College, in Lakeland, Florida, is the largest single site of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world! About 45 minutes from both Tampa and Orlando, Florida Southern has 2600 undergraduate students, 57% of whom come from Florida. The rest come from all across the US and 50 countries. US News and World Report has included FSC as one of the best colleges in the following categories: Regional Universities in the South, Most Innovative, Undergraduate Teaching, Best Value Schools, and Social Mobility. Princeton Review ranks it at #24 for Best Career Services in the nation. For Computer Science majors, the average starting salary is $82,500, with some students offered six-figure salaries upon graduation. And, by the way, Computer Science is a program they're looking to grow. Other popular majors are Biology, Business, and Nursing, which is a direct-admit program.

There's a 4-year housing requirement which underscores the sense of community here. The students I met were intelligent, articulate and focused. And so is the college president, Ann Kerr, who spent years at the University of Richmond before coming to Florida Southern as president in 2004.

33% of the students are involved in Greek life, and a sizeable portion of the students are athletes. At this Division 2 institution, student athletes have a slightly higher GPA than the entire student body, which is impressive!

There's no application fee, and 99% of students receive merit scholarships ranging from $9-25K per year.

I saw a lot of colleges on my tour in Florida and I was very impressed with this one. Give it a look!
