What a great visit to Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY! What I really love about Hartwick is Flightpath. This is a relatively new program that assures that students are supported and guided in every way possible to make the most of their college education and beyond. Freshman year, students are paired with a faculty advisor as well as a success coach. This continues through sophomore year. Junior year, a career coach and alumni mentor are added. The student meets regularly with all four of them and rest assured, these mentors reach out to students if the students don't reach out to them! Some other hallmarks of Flightplan include a Sophomore Success Summit, which is a required workshop about career readiness, networking, workplace etiquette and other professional skills. There's also an overnight alumni networking program which brings students together with alumni working in their field of interest. During our tour, we met an awesome geology professor who showed us a stone with a dinosaur footprint. I always feel good when professors are so excited to meet guests and talk about what excites them. This is always a great sign! Something else worth noting is that Hartwick offers a 3-year bachelor's degree program in many majors INCLUDING NURSING, where students have clinical in their first year. Also, Hartwick gives generous merit scholarships of up to $41,000 per year. They also give an automatic $10,000 scholarship for New York State residents. Lastly, it's important to note that SUNY Oneonta is a stone's throw away and students from both colleges interact and socialize, so although Hartwick only has 1200 students, it just doesn't feel that small.
