I had a great visit to Haverford College outside Philadelphia after my conference. The location is fantastic, 8 miles outside of Philly, and there are 4 train lines on campus with a 20 minute ride to downtown. I think that the most notable thing about Haverford is its honor code. They take it very seriously. Most exams are not proctored. Final exams are self scheduled. If you want to take it in your dorm room at 10am, you can do that. If you want to take it somewhere else the next day at 2pm, you can do that as well. At Haverford, they treat you like an adult because they believe you are one. The honor code is revisited every year and over 2/3 of current students must be there to vote on any changes. Haverford's Quaker roots can still be seen today in this kind of consensus-based decision-making. Academics are also taken very seriously at Haverford. Every student does a senior thesis. I think it's safe to say that Haverford is a haven for intellectuals. There are too many Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars and Nobel Prize winners amongst their alumni to list here. Outside the classroom, Haverford gives the student council a $500,000 budget to manage and fund student clubs and organizations. When I asked the admissions officer I met with if there was a lot of support for athletics on campus, she replied, "Well, I played basketball here and the only people who ever asked for my autograph were my professor's kids, who came to every game." That tells me a lot about Haverford.
