High Point University

I spent two full days at High Point University and it was truly unlike any other university I have visited. The campus is gorgeous with new buildings everywhere. It's the cleanest campus I've ever seen with multiple janitors in every building I went into, doing things like scrubbing the escalator that was already sparkling. And the amenities for students are unparalleled, such as full-size beds and gyms in most dorms, multiple swimming pools, an outdoor skating rink, classical music piped in on the academic quad, and multiple kiosks on campus with free hot chocolate, muffins and fruit for students who find it inconvenient to wake up early enough to get to breakfast before class.

But High Point knows who they are, what they're selling and to whom. They call themselves The Premier Life Skills University. In addition to academics, students are schooled in appropriate business etiquette. And they unapologetically claim that they provide a values based education. Ahough they don't define themselves as a Christian college, I found them deeply Christian. They believe in God, Family, Country, and this is repeated often. There is scripture on a number of walls. The radio station in the campus shuttle was set to a Christian music station. They embrace the Christmas season wholeheartedly with a life-sized Nativity scene in the middle of campus, beautiful decorations everywhere, Christmas trees and dozens of huge nutcrackers flanking every building. I think High Point could be a great fit for a student who leans right and wants a campus where they'll find support for their belief system. The student does not have to be Christian, but needs to be very comfortable in a deeply Christian environment.

So what will that student find at High Point? A business school with adjunct faculty with deep experience in business, a new nursing school with racially diverse mannequins and faculty that are deeply invested in the mental health of nurses and healthcare workers in this world that we live in. That was impressive. State-of-the-art facilities for communications majors. A career services office that is rated best in the country by Princeton Review. A university that produced 8 Fulbright semi-finalists this year. A brand new dental school with state-of-the-art facilities that students can apply to as sophomores to be able to get their bachelors and their dental degree in 6 years.

The current university president has been in office since 2005 and is responsible for a lot of High Point's tremendous growth. He has personally donated millions of dollars and a number of the buildings are named after him. I think that High Point's unique mission and philosophy stem from this president. And I will be intrigued to see what happens in the future when he decides to retire.

In the meantime, I think we'll continue to see more growth here. With a 79% acceptance rate, students who are a good fit will self-select in.
