On our sweep through NY, my colleagues and I had a great visit to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. Where is that, you ask? Interestingly, it's 45 minutes from Ithaca, Rochester, AND Syracuse. They are two separate colleges that share a campus, curriculum and faculty. Now that we know where the colleges are, let's talk about where the students go. HWS is ranked #1 for study abroad by The Princeton Review. Students choose from more than 50 semester, summer and January term options, most of which are accompanied by Hobart and William Smith faculty, who teach some of the classes. The international opportunities don't end with graduation: the US Department of State includes HWS on its list of top producing Fulbright Scholars. In fact, 19 HWS students earned this honor in the past 4 years. On campus, it's important to note that all students must have a major and a minor, all classes are capped at 30 students, and the career center is open for walk-in's for 2 hours every day. Admissions has a no-harm testing policy, so they only consider standardized tests that help an applicant. Merit scholarships are generous at up to $35,000, and there's neither an application fee nor a supplemental essay. Looking forward, HWS announced that they're adding 12 new varsity sports over the next 5 years, bringing the total number to 35. The new teams include men's and women's Alpine skiing, baseball, softball, women's bowling, men swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track-and-field, and men's and women's volleyball. For those who enjoy a different kind of competition, HWS added a varsity esports team this past fall. Great opportunities here make Hobart and William Smith Colleges worth a serious look!
