I had the chance to visit Middlebury College in Vermont while attending the NEACAC conference last week. Middlebury has a nice campus on 350 acres in a beautiful geographic location. I thought it was interesting to hear that Middlebury has the oldest environmental studies program in the country, which was established in 1965. It goes without saying that they have a strong commitment to environmentalism! Middlebury is most famous for its language program, however. They teach 10 modern and 2 classic languages. They also offer 36 of their own study abroad programs, which are fully immersive. I also loved hearing that they have language tables in the dining hall at lunch. Students taking introductory level language classes are required to sit at these tables and converse at least once per week. They are served by students who speak that language natively. Of course, all students are welcome to join and chat anytime. Also, Middlebury College has declared a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. 50% of their incoming freshman class are students of color. Furthermore, Middlebury offers Hillel for Jewish students and a Muslim prayer space. Upon asking about Catholic and Christian spaces, my tour guide was not familiar with any, nor was the admissions officer who presented to my group. To be fair, however, upon researching Christian and Catholic groups at Middlebury on the their website, I was assured that they exist. Lastly, they're now filling 70% of their freshman class in the early decision wave, so if Middlebury is the school for you, by all means apply ED!
