Oxford College

Oxford College of Emory university is a small liberal arts college 38 miles from Emory's Atlanta campus. When applying to Emory as an undergraduate, students can apply to one campus or the other, or both, with one application fee. 60% of applicants apply to both, and institutional priorities dictate where they are admitted. The Emory Atlanta experience is described in a separate post.

Oxford College is a beautiful campus of just over a thousand freshmen and sophomores seeking a small college experience. For two years, students fulfill general education requirements, then transfer to Emory Atlanta for their junior and senior years, where they go on to access all majors that Emory offers, including nursing and business. Classes here are smaller than they are on the Atlanta campus; 99% of them have fewer than 30 students. Also, leadership opportunities are significantly greater here because students aren't competing with upperclassmen for them. We were told that 65% of students here hold a leadership position of some kind. 99% of students live on campus, so there's a very strong sense of community.

Just off campus is the Oxford College Organic Farm, eleven acres donated by an alumnus. Students work alongside farm staff planting and harvesting produce, some of which is served in the dining hall. Furthermore, many faculty members use the farm as an extension of their classrooms.

Admission to Emory Oxford is every bit as competitive as it is to Emory Atlanta. It used to be thought that Emory Oxford was an easier, back-door pathway to an Emory education, but if that was ever the case, it certainly isn't today. Oxford College is a different experience for students seeking an Emory education, and could be the right choice for students who would be happy in a quintessential, small liberal arts college experience.
