While in Philadelphia, I also had the chance to visit Saint Joseph's University, located about 15 minutes northwest of downtown. The big news at Saint Joseph's is its recent acquisition of Philadelphia's University of the Sciences. Now, in addition to majors in business, education, and traditional arts and sciences on its longtime campus, Saint Joseph's University will also offer programs in physical and occupational therapy, physician assistant and pharmacy downtown. This also means a new endowment of $500 million and a combined alumni network of almost 100,000. I didn't have a chance to see the new downtown campus, but the original Hawk Hill campus is lovely, and I'm told there'll be a shuttle between the campuses. In a world of rapidly escalating selectivity in college admissions, Saint Joseph's offers a Jesuit education from faculty who hold terminal degrees - and the bar of admission is reasonable, with over 80% of students accepted and merit scholarships of up to $28,000 available!
