Day 2 of the upstate NY college blitz with my amazing colleagues began with a morning at Syracuse University. I had forgotten how beautiful and green the campus is, and the architecture is gorgeous. Some interesting rankings: Syracuse University's newspaper, the Daily Orange, is ranked #1 in the country, and Syracuse is ranked #4 in the country for Public Relations and Advertising. Keep in mind that Syracuse is home to the Newhouse School of Public Communications, so this shouldn't be a big surprise. Here's what else is interesting: Syracuse is home to the first Information Studies school in the country: the iSchool. Here, students can study Data Analytics and Information Management without the deep dive into several semesters of calculus that's required for many math/engineering/computer science majors. With too many minors to count, I'd like to highlight the ones I find unique: Gerontology, Logic, Sport Analytics and Sustainable Food Enterprises. On a sad note, Syracuse lost 35 students in the bombing of Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. In honor of those lives lost, Syracuse chooses 35 Remembrance Scholars every year; it's one of the highest honors a Syracuse University student can receive. They are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service. The motto of the Scholars is "Look Back and Act Forward," and I expect that these impressive young people are doing just that.
