I had a wonderful visit to Temple University in Philadelphia while in town for a conference last week. We were thrilled to be greeted by their fabulous marching band! Temple is an urban university in the heart of North Philly, but for the student who wants the best of both worlds, it has a contiguous, charming campus. Their mascot is an owl because Temple University began as a night school for local students. Because of that, it sometimes has a reputation as a commuter school, but it's important to know that Temple, while still serving local students well, is a thriving community of students from all over the country and all over the world. Furthermore, in 2015, Temple achieved status as an R1 research university, underscoring the fact that there's nothing provincial about Temple. Additionally, for students who get bored with dining hall food, Temple has a thriving food truck culture with over 3 dozen trucks offering every kind of food you can imagine. This culture is not new here, it dates back to the 1960s! Academically, Temple has far too many 4+1 programs to mention here. Temple also offers 3+4 dental, medical, pharmacy, and podiatry programs, and a 3+3 physical therapy program. Though a large school, the average class size is 24 and the student faculty ratio is 13:1 With tuition, room and board for out of state students at around $50,000, Temple is still honoring its original mission to offer affordable education to all.
