My last stop on my sweep of colleges in Maine was University of Maine in Orono. Umaine has 5 separate colleges and it's important to note that with the exception of nursing, it's possible to move within the schools if a student changes their major, as long as they have the prerequisites. For those nursing students, the clinicals are in Bangor which is not very far away and transportation is provided. All freshmen are required to live on campus and housing is available for all 4 years. All athletic events are free and hockey is huge here! Be prepared to wait in line for those tickets! There's a brand new engineering building on campus with no lecture halls, only labs and interactive classrooms. The walls are whiteboards and the building was mostly built by alumni! Some other nuggets: Greek life is not big here at 16% of the student body. They have a no-harm SAT policy in admissions, and there are visual and performing art scholarships worth $3K for students who will participate on campus. Decisions are made on a rolling basis and students should apply early for best merit consideration. 50% of students come from out of state and the university does match the price of other flagship universities. As the smallest of all the New England flagship state universities, University of Maine has a lot to offer!
