Students are back on campuses, and I'm back to my college visits! I visited the University of New England with my friend and colleague, Elise Rowley, this week. There are lots of great majors here, but Marine Affairs, Marine Entrepreneurship, Marine Biology, and Oceanography are particularly strong majors for undergrads - not to mention Aquaculture and Aquarium Science and Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture. Here's what I love: UNE has 363 acres of protected land and their own island for research. They also pipe in water from the Saco River and the ocean for their touch tanks. Fun fact: the Alfond Center for Health Sciences was built to look like an H20 molecule from the air. And all applied exercise science majors take gross anatomy and dissect cadavers, which is quite impressive at the undergraduate level. They have a campus in Tangier, Morocco with labs available, so science and nursing students can actually study abroad and take core classes while they are there! Outside the classroom, hockey is very big at UNE. There are men's and women's varsity, club, and intermural hockey teams. And there's a free skate for all spectators after every varsity hockey game which is very popular with the UNE community. With merit scholarships for over 90% of students, there's lots to love at UNE.
