University of North Carolina Greensboro

The University of North Carolina Greensboro began as a college for women in 1892, becoming one of the 3 original institutions making up the UNC system in 1932. In 1964, men were admitted for the first time. Today, there are 18,000 students, 14,000 of whom are undergraduates.

The most diverse within the NC public system with the exception of the HBCU's, UNC Greensboro defines itself as a minority-serving institution. They have a strategic plan "focused on transforming students, knowledge, our region, and improving graduation rates for low-income, underrepresented, first-generation, and rural students. In fact, UNCG ranks #1 in social mobility by the Wall Street Journal, and #1 in North Carolina for affordability by the New York Times. 50% of students are first-generation, 46% received Pell grants, and 53% are people of color. Furthermore, it's #1 within the UNC system for total percentage of Hispanic/Latino enrollment, which is 14%.

The campus, although considered urban, is relatively contiguous and very pretty, with a traditional quad surrounded by brick buildings. I ate in the dining hall and the food was really good and the staff could not have been friendlier. Academically, UNCG offers many degrees within 6 colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business & Economics, Visual & Performing Arts, Education, Health & Human Sciences, and Nursing.

With a 92% acceptance rate, UNC Greensboro is very accessible, but the 4-year graduation rate of 38% and the 6-year rate of 58% remain a concern.
