Today's second visit was to the the University of Rhode Island. In the past 12 years, URI has invested $900 million in capital improvements, including new facilities for the English, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Pharmacy and Communications departments. In the College of Pharmacy, they have a mock CVS where the Pharmacy students practice and the Drama students are the customers! There are over 90 majors and 80 minors, including some really interesting ones: Ocean Engineering, Writing and Rhetoric, Landscape Architecture, Textile Marketing, Nonprofit Administration, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Geology and Geological Oceanography. They house freshmen by academic interest with not only an RA, but an academic mentor who may provide study groups and academic support, which is really unique. Best of all, students who aren't ready to declare a major when applying are embraced by URI and most programs remain open to them as they find their way.
