I also visited the University of Vermont while in Burlington last week, and learned even more about a university I already loved. Here are some fast facts: Half of the valedictorians in Vermont enrolled at UVM last year. Also also, over half of of UVM's student body comes from outside New England. Surprisingly, students are required to live on campus for their first 2 years. I love that. 100% of freshmen live in themed learning communities with other students of similar interests. On the academic front, in addition to the usual offerings, I find the following majors fascinating: Food Systems, Molecular Genetics, Agroecology, Parks, Recreation & Tourism, and Sustainable Landscape Horticulture. For those who see a future in health-related graduate school, UVM has a Pre-med Enhancement Program and students who complete it are guaranteed an interview with UVM medical school! Also, there is a wonderful program called CREAM which allows students to manage the dairy farm at UVM. 96% of the students involved in that program are admitted to veterinary school and 91% of percent of students at UVM are accepted. There is also a brand new STEM complex that is gorgeous, and the University of Vermont Medical School and hospital is right there on campus. It's a level one trauma center and the largest hospital north of Boston and south of Montreal. It's a fabulous resource for students who want internships, research, and volunteer experience in a hospital setting. Lastly, I was told that the administration turned the basketball courts into an outdoor skating rink during Covid. I love that they thought outside the box to provide safe spaces for their students. I'm also told this is now going to be an annual tradition. Way to go, UVM!
