Wofford College

Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina is a small liberal arts college of 1818 students on 180 gorgeous acres. And our host was clear that they are are intentionally staying around that size. Although 38 states and 19 countries are represented on campus, the student body felt distinctly southern to me and in fact, 57% of students come from South Carolina. And to be transparent, the student body is overwhelmingly white, at 80% Caucasian. I found it worth noting that they have counselors recruiting "as far north as Washington DC and Pennsylvania." As such, Wofford is very well known and respected in the south, but little known in the rest of the country.

Wofford is a true residential college with 96% of students living on campus all 4 years. There is an absolutely gorgeous senior village that I'd like to move into, so why would anyone want to move off campus? Greek life is huge here with 54% of students participating. There's a gorgeous Greek "village," but no actual Greek housing. And I love the fact that they do not rush first semester, which gives incoming students time to take it all in. And with Division One sports, there's a lot of school spirit, with lots of students coming out for the games.

All incoming students are assigned a success team with a big brother or big sister, a faculty advisor, and faculty and staff mentors. The average class size is 16, the maximum class size is 25, and not surprisingly, many students successfully apply and go on to law, medical, and dental school. Majors include the usual liberal arts as well as Computer Science, Finance, Business Economics, and Studio Art.

Wofford Scholars can earn a merit scholarship of up to a full ride, but keep in mind they must be nominated by their high school counselor in spring of junior year. They're looking for outstanding students in the top 10% of their class with an SAT score of 1300+ or an ACT of 28+.

I found the admissions representative refreshingly candid: 90% of ED students are admitted 60% of EA students are admitted, and 30% of RD students are admitted. And they are happy to advise students on whether or not to submit their test scores. But don't judge Wofford by it's higher acceptance rate. This is a solid regional college with great outcomes.
